Crawford Funeral Home History
Since 1863, the Crawford family has been involved in the funeral business. Daniel John Crawford, who emigrated from Glasgow, Scotland, to the United States, was initially interested in working in the Copper Country mines, but instead took up cabinet–making and casket–making. In 1886, his son, John Daniel Crawford, joined the business, and in 1903, John became the first licensed embalmer, funeral director, and picture framer in the Copper Country. In 1916, John purchased the first motorized funeral coach in the Upper Peninsula, and in 1926, his son Donald John Crawford and brother Ransom Crawford joined the business. Following the death of John Daniel Crawford in 1941, Ransom was forced to close the business when he entered the Army in 1942. However, when he returned in 1944, he and Emmett O‘Neil opened a new funeral home, “Memorial Chapel,” which still exists today.
