One of the most fascinating and controversial questions of the Christian faith is on the subject of animal spirituality.

In particular, the subject of praying for dogs, cats and other pets can hit a personal nerve for many.

Should followers of Christ pray for our dogs to be healed, when they are on the verge of death, and for their surviving canine friends? What does Scripture tell us?

Humans have sacred bond with dogs

It’s important to consider the unshakeable bond that humans share with dogs. Dogs are man’s best friend for a reason.

Our relationships with dogs can be used by God to transcend above life’s darkest moments. Our prayers for dogs can help them do the same.

The Word of God Calls on us to Pray for Dogs

The Lord makes mankind stewards over all of His Creation. We are called by Him to conduct ourselves as good stewards. Titus 2:7 calls upon all believers to be an example of conducting good works with integrity and honor for the Lord. This includes praying for dogs and their comfort.

1 Corinthians 10:24 tells us that we are not to seek our own good but the good of others. We are seeking the health and well being of our dogs when we pray to the God of the universe on their behalf.

As ambassadors of Christ, we have a high calling and privilege in our lives to pray for each situation, decision, and everyone. This is not just limited to our neighbors as people. Jesus showed compassion in all that He did and continues to do. We must do the same.

All creatures are part of God’s Creation

The Book of Genesis emphatically proclaims that God created all things and the very breath of life resides within them (Genesis 1: 24-25 and 7:15).

We may boldly pray in the name of Jesus Christ for the healing of dogs

Scripture declares that the Lord will answer our prayers according to His will. 1 John 5:14 declares this wonderful promise.

The Word of God declares that we should make our requests known to God

Ephesians 6:18 declares that we should pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. This would certainly include prayer for the healing of dogs and other pets.

Believe in faith that our request has been answered

Mark 11:24 shows us that when we have boldness and confidence in what we are praying for, the Lord says our prayers will be answered as long as they are in His will.

How Should We Pray for our Dogs and Other Pets?

When our pets fall ill, we should pray for their healing

If there are multiple accounts in Scripture where people are healed, the Lord will do the same for animals. When a dog is sick or going in for surgery, we must trust that the Lord will answer our prayers

Pray for God to be glorified through the care we administer and our prayers for our pets

God is glorified when we show Jesus Christ to someone. One of the biggest manners that is done is when we pray for dogs and show His undying compassion. Praying for a dog’s comfort and emotional healing is a powerful demonstration of the love of Christ.

Pray for God to comfort our dogs when their time has come

When your dog is at the end of its life, one can only imagine what emotions are present in your dog’s mind.

Your dog does not want to leave you because it has always been by your side. When we pray for God’s comfort on their behalf, dogs will be assured that they are going to be in the presence of the Creator and can be at peace. We will be at peace as well.

Dog prayers are controversial in some Christian circles

While dog and pet prayers may be seen as controversial, we must read what the Word of God says and speaks for ourselves.

A person’s relationship with a dog cannot be adequately described by the human vocabulary. Our prayers for dogs at the end of their lives is that much more indescribable in terms of the character of Christ that is on display.

God uses all things for His glory, including our prayers for our canine companions. I would like to leave you with the following image:

I would like for you to imagine that you have a son or daughter. They have developed an unbreakable bond with your dog. Think of what would happen if your dog suddenly fell ill and your child asks you if God will heal your dog.

What will you do? What will you say? What will you do if your child asks if you will pray for the other family dog that is grieving the coming loss of its companion?

Jesus can use your prayers of healing and comfort for your dog to win your child to the Kingdom of God. Prayers are more powerful than we can possibly imagine. You ever know when your prayers may be the only example of Jesus that someone may ever see.
